Williams hamstring injury doesn't stop weigh in fireworks

James Mortimer - (8/02/2012) - comments 38 Comments

Heavy training has resulted in All Black Sonny Bill Williams suffering a minor hamstring tear, but this will not stop him from participating in his fifth professional fight today.

Pass It On

Adding to the spectacle was the minor scuffle that occurred between Williams and Clarence Tillman when the two fighters completed their weigh-in yesterday.

Sonny Bill clocked in at 107.9kg, while Tillman tipped the scales at 128.4kg.

Williams has been doing the bulk of his training in Sydney, working with Tony Mundine at his gym, while it was reported he has been doing rugby training, including sprint work which caused the minor leg injury which won’t affect his bout.

When the two fighters went face-to-face while weighing themselves prior to the fight, there were words exchanged between the pair which led to Tillman pushing Williams in the chest.

As the All Black recoiled, Sonny Bill’s entourage tackled Tillman to the floor, and the two exchanged some further ‘trash talk’ before heading off.

Williams told the Sydney Morning Herald that his speed training was so he didn’t neglect his rugby preparation while getting ready for the fight.

'I hadn't done speed work since I was 18 so it was good but I went a bit too hard one day after 10 rounds of sparring the night before and pulled my hammy,” he said.

'When I was in Sydney I was doing a bit of speed during the day because it was relevant to my rugby and at night I would do boxing.'

'The coaching staff and everyone at the Chiefs have been really understanding and great as to what I need to do for training and things like that.”
